TEN QUESTIONS TO ASK ABOUT THE SEASON--
1.What did you learn from the coaches?
2.What turned out to be the best way to communicate with the coaches?
3.What did you do well this year?
4.What did your team do well?
5.Did you get to try anything new? (Play a different position, learn a new skill?)
6.Was there one memorable play, game or tournament you’ll never forget?
7.Did you make any new friends?
8.Did you learn any strategies for getting along with everyone?
9.What is your goal for next year?
10.Overall, did you have fun?
Answering these questions will help you put the season in perspective and prepare for what's ahead.

Stay hungry--good stuff ahead.
SCHWAN CUP UPDATE--due to solid performance over the first two years, the Huskies have been invited back for two more years in the Bronze Division of the Schwan Cup Tournament. Promotion to Silver will require winning the tournament.
TEAM QUALITY CONTROL--I've posted a survey at http://www.owatonna.k12.mn.us/Classroom/OHS/Language%20Arts/wfish/Quality%20control.doc
Every Varsity and JV player, please download it, fill it out, print it, and bring the copy to the rink on Tuesday. We'll collect them anonymously--looking for honest information about the program.
JANUARY FITNESS TEST RESULTS--posted at http://www.owatonna.k12.mn.us/Classroom/OHS/Language%20Arts/wfish/Fitness%20tests%202010.htm
PANCAKE SUPPER --was a success--thanks to players, parents, and participants.
THANK YOU, ALUMNI--for a couple of good skates at the varsity scrimmage and alumni game.
SKATE WITH THE HUSKIES--good job by the varsity after the Mayo game, making it a fun experience for young players even though the high school players were tired and sore.
KEN AUSTIN CLASSIC--Thanks to many organizers and hard-working performances on the ice, the Ken Austin Classic is back, and in fine form. By virtue of Thursday's tie with Lourdes and Saturday's shutout of New Richmond, Owatonna earned the championship.
ANNUAL WINDSOR CHOP DINNER AND SILENT AUCTION--Many thanks to all involved for an enjoyable and productive evening.
PARK & REC SESSION--Another good job by those who showed up. Keep up the good work.
FITNESS TEST--We now have baselines from which to measure progress. We'll have another fitness test on Saturday, January 23, and a third on Saturday, February 20.
A WORTHWHILE READ AS THE SEASON BEGINS--http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/05/11/090511fa_fact_gladwell?currentPage=all
OYHA/PARK & REC/OHS MENTORING--forms for your hours of help with OYHA and Park and Rec are posted at
http://www.owatonna.k12.mn.us/Classroom/OHS/Language%20Arts/wfish/OHS-OYHApracticeform.htm
Park and Rec Level 1 sessions are where we need the most help throughout the season, and their schedule is posted at
http://www.owatonnahockey.com/cgi-bin/calendar/calendar.cgi?config=707.cfg
REQUEST FROM PARK AND REC--Please continue to work with the Level 1 group--pick out a couple of players and help them learn to skate. One-on-one contact really helps kids have a good first experience on the ice, and you can make a difference that will be fun and valuable. They look up to you more than literally--perhaps more than you know.
TEAM RULES--Pay attention. Take care of bidness. Be willing to learn, especially from mistakes. Give it your best. Far as I'm concerned, they're all included in the last one.
MIND WORK--look for an opportunity every day to be mindful for a sustained length of time. Read a book. Really listen to a new piece of music. Close your eyes for five minutes and notice what you hear. Turn off the tweeter. Be here now. It'll pay dividends.
WORK HARD, BUT DON'T MAKE HARD WORK OF IT--Riding your bike for transportation gives you an opportunity to build your legs while taking care of bidness. Think of other ways you can work hard without making hard work of it, on and off the ice. Examples: move the puck quickly rather than trying to beat three players and then having to play defense after the turnover; sprint up after the outlet pass to keep a tight gap and be a passing option rather than skating up slowly and then having to do defensive starts and stops in our own zone; work hard in preparation and practice rather than have to play catch-up when the games arrive. There are a thousand ways that front-loading your work will make the back end more productive and enjoyable. Look for them and you'll find them, on and off the ice.
STRENGTH TRAINING--Programs are posted at http://www.owatonna.k12.mn.us/Classroom/OHS/Language%20Arts/wfish/Strength%20Training%20Program.htm
SUMMER PROGRAM--form is posted at http://www.owatonna.k12.mn.us/Classroom/OHS/Language%20Arts/wfish/OHS%20BOYS%20HOCKEY%20SUMMER%20DEVELOPMENT%20CAMP.htm Time to do work, boys.

LOCKER ROOM IMPROVEMENTS--Desired improvements (overhead audiovisual system, past records and words to live by, Grit pix, ping-pong table, etc.) in the near future will require fundraising.
WISE WORDS--A reminder from Andy Murray:
* If you're not early, you're late.
* If you're not getting better, you're getting worse.
* If you listen, you'll be heard.
* Tap into the power of flex: don't worry about things you can't change.
* No regrets. Live and play in such a way that you can look back with satisfaction.
